In recent years, there has been a growing obsession with the idea of owning digital assets - things like digital art, videos, music, and more. Platforms like NFT marketplaces have enabled people to buy, sell, and trade "ownership" of digital content. However, this mania over digital ownership distracts us from what truly matters - the ideas and creativity behind the assets themselves.
When we focus too much on owning the digital asset, we lose sight of its original purpose and meaning. Take digital art as an example. NFTs have caused some digital artworks to be valued based on their token price rather than their artistic merit. This excessive financial speculation drowns out the artist's creative vision.
Rather than fixating on owning the digital file, we should focus on the ideas, creativity, and intentions behind the work. We should appreciate digital art for how it challenges our perspectives, evokes emotions, and expands human imagination. The point is not to own the art for bragging rights or financial gain - but to enjoy the art and support the artist's contribution to society.
The same applies to other digital assets like music, videos, and more. We have to move beyond the illusion of ownership and go back to basics - focusing on the core ideas and knowledge these assets can provide. The true value lies not in owning the digital file, but in applying its underlying purpose.
By detaching from the notion of digital ownership, we can refocus on what really matters - using technology to spread ideas, creativity, and wisdom. The alluring concept of digital property only divides us into owners and non-owners. But ideas belong to no one and everyone. Wisdom should be shared, not owned. Let go of shallow ownership and embrace what digitization can do to educate, inspire and unite humanity.
